Pablo's Skate Build Diary: Nike Quest V-Ti Conversion on Sure-Grip Avenger Magnesium Plates

Why Convert Nike Quest V-Ti Boots?

Before we get into why the Quest V-Ti makes a great quad skate, it's important to address one of the boot's biggest weaknesses. The Nike Quest range is notorious for having a weak outer sole and a cardboard inners. Once the original ice blade holder is removed, these issues become even more apparent. If left unaddressed, the outer sole can begin to separate from the boot and the cardboard insole can compress, flex or deteriorate over time.

For this reason, properly regluing the outer sole and fitting carbon fibre strengthening plates inside the boot is absolutely essential during the conversion process. At Pabloskates, we've repaired and converted hundreds of boots with this kind of construction over the years, so dealing with these common issues is second nature. Every Quest V-Ti conversion we build receives the strengthening work needed to ensure the finished skate is durable, reliable and capable of handling years of use. Once these weaknesses have been addressed, the Quest V-Ti becomes one of the most desirable conversion boots available.

The Nike Quest V-Ti is one of the more sought-after boots from Nike Bauer's golden era. Featuring distinctive silver titanium-effect graphics and classic Nike styling, these boots stand out from the crowd while retaining the comfort and performance that made the Quest range so popular.

Interestingly, when these boots were new in 2007-2008, the Quest range actually sat above the Flexlite range in Nike Bauer's lineup and carried a higher price tag. Back then, the Quest was considered the more premium skate. Fast forward to today and the situation has almost completely reversed, with converted Flexlite boots often attracting more attention and commanding higher prices among the quad skating community. Rather ironic, wouldn't you agree?

The Quest V-Ti strikes an excellent balance between support and flexibility, making it a fantastic candidate for a quad conversion. Unlike many modern hockey skates that prioritise stiffness above all else, the V-Ti allows enough ankle movement to feel natural on quads while still providing the support needed for confident skating.

What many skaters don't realise is that the Quest and Flexlite ranges are remarkably similar in terms of fit, comfort and overall construction. While the Flexlite name tends to attract more attention within the quad skating community, the on-skate experience is often far closer than many people expect. If you're looking for that famous Nike Flexlite comfort but don't want to pay Flexlite prices, the Quest range can be a fantastic alternative. As long as you don't mind the fact they're not Flexlites, you can often pick up a pair of Quest boots for significantly less money and end up with a skate that feels remarkably similar on your feet.

Whether you're into rhythm, jam, recreational or outdoor skating, the Quest V-Ti delivers the responsive and comfortable feel that has made converted Nike boots legendary within the quad skating community.

Why Use Sure-Grip Avenger Magnesium Plates?

The Sure-Grip Avenger Magnesium is one of the most advanced roller skate plates available today. Its 45-degree truck geometry creates a highly responsive skate that excels when it comes to edge work, manoeuvrability and agility.

Despite being incredibly strong, the magnesium construction keeps weight to a minimum, helping skaters maintain quick footwork and effortless transitions.

For skaters who enjoy rhythm skating, jam skating, dance skating or simply want a skate that feels alive beneath their feet, the Avenger Magnesium remains one of the most exciting plates on the market.

The Conversion Process

For this build, the original ice holders and runners were removed before preparing the boots for their new life as quad skates.

The Avenger Magnesium plates were carefully aligned and mounted to complement the skating characteristics of the Quest V-Ti boots. As with every conversion, plate placement was chosen to suit the intended style of skating rather than simply following a generic factory position.

Once mounted, all hardware was secured and checked to ensure the setup was ready for many years of skating.

How Do They Skate?

This combination creates an exceptionally lively and responsive skate.

The Quest V-Ti boot provides excellent comfort and support while the Avenger Magnesium plates allow the skater to take full advantage of deep edges and rapid transitions.

Compared to a traditional 10-degree plate, the 45-degree Avenger feels more agile and more eager to turn, making it particularly rewarding for experienced skaters who enjoy expressive footwork and edge control.

At the same time, the comfortable Nike Bauer boot keeps the setup approachable and enjoyable for longer skating sessions.

Who Is This Setup Best For?

This setup is ideal for:

  • Rhythm skaters

  • Jam skaters

  • Dance skaters

  • Experienced recreational skaters

  • Skaters who enjoy deep edges and quick transitions

  • Anyone looking for a premium custom quad skate

The combination of a classic Nike Bauer boot and a high-performance Avenger Magnesium plate creates a setup that feels both comfortable and highly capable.

Nike Quest V-Ti Availability

While the Quest range as a whole isn't particularly difficult to find on the second-hand market, the Quest V-Ti is a completely different story. The V-Ti was only produced for a relatively short period and is one of the rarest Nike Quest models you'll come across today. In fact, despite specialising in hockey skate conversions for the past four years, I've only ever had two pairs pass through the Pabloskates workshop.

Their distinctive dark blue material and silver titanium-effect graphics, rarity and excellent skating characteristics make them highly desirable among skate conversion enthusiasts. Clean examples rarely come up for sale and, when they do, they tend to attract plenty of attention. If you're lucky enough to find a pair in your size, they're well worth considering. Not only do they offer that classic Nike comfort, but you'll also be skating on a boot that very few other people are likely to own.
