There are comfortable hockey skates... and then there are the Nike N-Dorfins.
Among hockey skate conversion enthusiasts, the Nike N-Dorfin and Bauer Flow are widely regarded as two of the most comfortable ice hockey boots ever made for quad skate conversions. Their generous padding, forgiving fit and natural flex make them favourites among skaters who value comfort without sacrificing support.
For this build, we paired a set of Nike N-Dorfins with Sure-Grip Rock plates to create a lightweight, dependable setup that's perfect for everything from casual outdoor skating to long sessions at the rink.
The Boots
The Nike N-Dorfin was produced during the hugely popular Nike Bauer era and has earned almost legendary status within the quad conversion community.
Unlike many modern performance hockey boots that prioritise stiffness above all else, the N-Dorfin was designed with comfort in mind. The result is a boot that feels broken in from day one while still providing excellent ankle support and control.
Its forgiving flex makes it ideal for quad skating, allowing your ankles to move naturally without feeling restrictive. That's one of the biggest reasons these boots remain so sought after years after production ended.
They're not as rare as some models, such as the Nike Ignite 44, but finding a clean pair in your size is becoming increasingly difficult as more skaters discover just how good they are for conversions. It is worth noting that these boots come in a little smaller than other boots. Sizing these up and buying a pair 1 size larger than your normal size is fully recommended.
Why the Sure-Grip Rock?
The Sure-Grip Rock has become one of the most trusted nylon roller skate plates on the market.
It's lightweight, incredibly durable and offers predictable handling that suits virtually every style of skating. Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, the Rock provides a stable platform that inspires confidence.
Some of its key features include:
Lightweight reinforced nylon construction.
Stable 10-degree truck geometry.
Adjustable 5/8" toe stops.
Excellent durability.
Fantastic value for money.
It's one of those plates that simply works, which is why it continues to be a popular choice for custom builds.
The Conversion Process
Every conversion begins by carefully removing the original ice blade before preparing the outsole for its new life as a quad skate.
Older Nike Bauer boots are also assessed to determine whether carbon fibre reinforcement is required before mounting. Where needed, reinforcement plates are fitted to ensure the boot has the long-term strength needed for roller skating.
The Sure-Grip Rock plates are then carefully aligned to suit both the boot and the skater before being securely mounted using quality hardware. Finally, the trucks are adjusted, wheels and bearings installed, and the finished skates undergo a full inspection before leaving the workshop.
Finished Result
The combination of the incredibly comfortable Nike N-Dorfin boot and the dependable Sure-Grip Rock plate creates a skate that's easy to enjoy from the very first session.
This setup is ideal for:
Indoor rink skating
Outdoor cruising
Rhythm skating
Recreational skating
Long skating sessions where comfort really matters
If your priority is comfort without compromising performance, it's difficult to think of many better combinations.
Thinking About Converting Your Own N-Dorfins?
The Nike N-Dorfin has earned its reputation for good reason. Even years after production ended, it remains one of the most desirable hockey boots for quad skate conversions, combining comfort, support and classic Nike Bauer styling in one package.
