The Bauer Vapor range has always been one of the most recognisable names in ice hockey, and the Vapor X400 is no exception. Designed as a mid-range recreational hockey skate, it combines lightweight construction with a supportive fit, making it an excellent candidate for a quad skate conversion.
For this build, we paired the Bauer Vapor X400 with Sure-Grip Rock plates to create a reliable, versatile setup that's equally at home indoors or outdoors.
The Boots
The Bauer Vapor X400 was developed for recreational and intermediate hockey players looking for a lightweight boot without the price tag of Bauer's elite models.
Compared to the stiffer, top-end Vapors, the X400 offers a little more forgiveness, making it particularly well suited to quad skating. It provides excellent ankle support while still allowing enough forward flex to keep the skate comfortable during longer sessions.
Like many older Bauer models, the X400 has now been discontinued, but good second-hand examples continue to make fantastic conversion projects.
Why the Sure-Grip Rock?
The Sure-Grip Rock has become one of the most popular nylon roller skate plates available, and for good reason.
Despite its affordable price, it offers excellent durability and dependable performance. The reinforced nylon construction keeps weight down while remaining strong enough for everyday skating.
Some of the benefits include:
Lightweight nylon construction.
Stable 10-degree truck geometry.
Adjustable 5/8" toe stops.
Excellent value for money.
Suitable for indoor and outdoor skating.
The Rock is an ideal choice for recreational skaters, beginners and experienced skaters alike who want a dependable setup without unnecessary weight.
The Conversion Process
Every pair of hockey skates that comes through the Pabloskates workshop is converted with the same attention to detail.
After removing the original ice blades, the outsole is carefully prepared before the plate is positioned to suit both the boot and the skater. Correct plate placement is one of the most important factors in how a pair of quad skates will perform, so every build is individually aligned rather than relying solely on factory mounting holes.
Once mounted, the hardware is checked, the trucks are adjusted and the finished skates undergo a final inspection before leaving the workshop.
Finished Result
The Bauer Vapor X400 and Sure-Grip Rock combination creates a lightweight, comfortable and dependable pair of quad skates suitable for a wide range of skating styles.
They're particularly well suited to:
Indoor rink skating
Outdoor cruising
Recreational skating
Learning new skills
Everyday sessions
The supportive Vapor boot and reliable Rock plate work together to create a setup that's comfortable, predictable and built to last.
