The Bauer Vapor range has always been one of the most recognisable names in hockey, and while the X200 sat towards the entry end of the lineup, that actually makes it a fantastic choice for a quad skate conversion.

For this build, we paired the Bauer Vapor X200 with Playmaker plates to create an affordable, lightweight setup that's perfect for everyday skating. It proves that you don't need premium components to end up with an excellent pair of custom quad skates.

The Boots

The Bauer Vapor X200 was designed as a recreational hockey skate, offering a comfortable fit with enough support for new and developing players.

One of the biggest advantages of the X200 for quad conversions is that it isn't excessively stiff. Many top-end hockey boots are designed to transfer as much power as possible on the ice, but that level of stiffness can actually work against you when roller skating. The X200 offers a much more forgiving flex, allowing the boot to move naturally with your ankle while still providing plenty of support.

As with many Bauer recreational models, the X200 has now been discontinued, making good second-hand examples increasingly popular with the skate conversion community.

Why the Playmaker Plate?

The Playmaker has become one of my go-to recommendations for anyone wanting a dependable quad skate without spending a fortune.

Its reinforced nylon construction keeps the weight low while delivering impressive strength and durability for recreational skating.

Some of its key features include:

  • Lightweight reinforced nylon construction.

  • Stable 10-degree truck geometry.

  • Strong and dependable design.

  • Excellent value for money.

  • Suitable for both indoor and outdoor skating.

The Playmaker is proof that entry-level doesn't have to mean poor quality. It's a solid performer that suits everything from first-time skaters to experienced riders looking for a reliable everyday setup.

The Conversion Process

Every pair of hockey skates that arrives at the Pabloskates workshop is treated individually.

After carefully removing the original ice blades, the outsole is prepared and the Playmaker plates are positioned specifically for the skater. Correct plate placement is one of the most important aspects of any conversion and has a huge influence on balance, stability and manoeuvrability.

Once mounted, all hardware is checked, the trucks are adjusted and the finished skates are fully inspected before they're ready to hit the rink.

Finished Result

The Bauer Vapor X200 and Playmaker combination creates a comfortable, lightweight quad skate that's perfect for a huge range of skating styles.

This setup is particularly well suited to:

  • Indoor rink skating

  • Outdoor cruising

  • Recreational skating

  • Learning new skills

  • Everyday use

It's a dependable build that offers excellent comfort and outstanding value, making it a great option for anyone looking to get into custom quad skates.

Thinking About Converting Your Own Vapor X200?

The Bauer Vapor X200 is another excellent example of why recreational hockey skates often make the best quad conversions. Comfortable, supportive and forgiving, it's a boot that works brilliantly on wheels.
