This week's build diary features a classic hockey boot that continues to make an excellent foundation for a custom quad skate conversion.
For this project, we converted a pair of Nike Bauer Vapor Speed ice hockey skates into a set of quad roller skates using Playmaker plates.
Combining the comfort and support of a quality hockey boot with the reliability of a proven quad plate creates a skate that's equally at home at the rink, on the streets or at your local skate meet.
Why the Nike Bauer Vapor Speed?
Nike Bauer skates have developed something of a cult following within the roller skating community, and it's easy to see why.
The Vapor Speed offers:
Excellent ankle support
Lightweight construction
Comfortable fit
Responsive feel
Classic Nike Bauer styling
Many skaters love the secure fit of hockey boots, and the Vapor Speed delivers exactly that while remaining comfortable enough for longer skating sessions.
It's a boot that continues to prove its worth years after leaving the ice rink.
Preparing the Conversion
As with all custom conversions, the first stage involved removing the original blade holder and preparing the sole for mounting.
Proper preparation is critical to ensuring the finished skate performs as intended.
Once the sole was cleaned and inspected, measurements were taken to determine the optimal plate position.
Careful alignment helps ensure:
Better stability
Improved handling
Consistent power transfer
A more natural skating experience
It's one of the most important parts of the entire conversion process.
Why Playmaker Plates?
For this build, the customer chose Playmaker plates.
Playmakers have become one of the most popular plate options for custom conversions thanks to their excellent balance of affordability, reliability and performance.
Key features include:
Lightweight nylon construction
10-degree truck geometry
Good manoeuvrability
Easy maintenance
Great value for money
For many skaters, Playmakers offer everything needed to enjoy both indoor and outdoor skating without breaking the bank.
Mounting and Assembly
With the plate positioned and aligned, the mounting hardware was installed and secured.
The skates were then assembled and adjusted, including:
Trucks
Cushions
Bearings
Wheels
Toe stops
Each component was checked before the skates received their final inspection.
Attention to detail during this stage helps ensure every build leaves the workshop ready to skate.
The Finished Result
The finished Nike Bauer Vapor Speed conversion looked fantastic.
The classic styling of the Nike Bauer boots paired perfectly with the Playmaker setup, creating a skate that combines vintage hockey aesthetics with modern quad skating performance.
These conversions remain popular because they offer something unique. The fit and feel of a hockey boot is very different from a traditional quad boot, and many skaters find they prefer the additional support and responsiveness.
Why We Love Nike Bauer Conversions
Nike Bauer conversions continue to be some of our favourite projects.
Not only do they look fantastic, but they also give older skates a second life while creating something completely unique.
Every pair tells its own story, and it's always satisfying seeing a set of skates that once belonged on the ice rolling out of the workshop ready for life on eight wheels.
Thinking About Your Own Conversion?
