Pablo's Skate Build Diary: Nike Flexlite 4 Conversion on Sure-Grip Avenger Plates
Updated: Aug 29
There's always something satisfying about bringing an older pair of hockey boots back to life, and this week's build is a great example of that.
For this conversion we started with a pair of classic Nike Flexlite 4 ice hockey boots and transformed them into a unique set of custom quad roller skates using Sure-Grip Avenger plates. The result is a lightweight, responsive setup that looks every bit as good as it performs.
Why the Nike Flexlite 4?
The Nike Flexlite range has built a loyal following over the years, and it's easy to see why. The Flexlite 4 offers an excellent balance of support and comfort, making it a fantastic candidate for a quad conversion.
Unlike many modern hockey boots that are designed to be extremely stiff, these older boots provide enough support while still allowing the flexibility many roller skaters prefer.
The Build
For this conversion we paired the boots with Sure-Grip Avenger plates, one of the most distinctive roller skate plates available.
The Avenger's 45° kingpin design gives the skate an incredibly agile and responsive feel, making it a favourite among experienced skaters looking for quick edge changes and tight manoeuvrability.
As with every build that leaves the Pabloskates workshop, the plates were carefully aligned and mounted to suit the boots, ensuring everything was square, secure and ready to skate.
Built by Hand
Every pair of custom skates we build is assembled individually in our Derby workshop.
That includes:
Removing the original ice hockey blades.
Preparing and inspecting the boots.
Mounting the roller skate plates.
Installing the hardware.
Fitting heels where required.
Final inspection before shipping.
No two builds are ever exactly the same, which is part of what makes custom conversions so rewarding.
Thinking About Your Own Conversion?
If you've got an old pair of hockey skates sitting in a cupboard, they could make an excellent pair of custom quad skates.
Whether you're after a relaxed recreational setup or a high-performance artistic or jam skating build, we'll help you choose the right plates, wheels and components to suit the way you skate.
