Pablo's Skate Build Diary: Nike Flexlite 2 Conversion on Sure-Grip Avanti Magnesium Plates

Updated: Jun 13

The Ultimate Bauer Quad Skate Conversion

When it comes to vintage hockey skate conversions, few boots have achieved the cult following of the Nike Flexlite 2. Lightweight, comfortable and increasingly difficult to find, the Flexlite 2 has become one of the most sought-after boots for custom quad skate builds. Enthusiasts regularly describe them as comfortable, supportive and ideal candidates for roller skate conversions.

Pairing these iconic boots with Sure-Grip Avanti Magnesium plates creates a setup that combines classic hockey skate styling with modern roller skate performance.

Why Convert Nike Flexlite 2 Boots?

The Flexlite 2 was originally designed as a recreational ice skate boot. Unlike many modern ultra-rigid hockey skates, the Flexlite range offers a balance of support and flexibility that translates exceptionally well to quad skating.

Benefits of the Nike Flexlite 2 include:

  • Comfortable fit straight out of the box

  • Excellent ankle support

  • Responsive feel without being overly stiff

  • Classic Nike Bauer styling

  • Increasing rarity and collectability

Many skaters specifically seek out Flexlite 2 boots because they provide the support of a hockey skate while still allowing the ankle movement needed for rhythm, recreational and rink skating.

Why Use Avanti Magnesium Plates?

The Sure-Grip Avanti Magnesium plate is widely regarded as one of the best performance-oriented quad skate plates available.

Compared to entry-level nylon plates, the Avanti Mag offers:

  • Exceptional strength

  • Lightweight magnesium construction

  • Increased power transfer

  • Improved responsiveness

  • Adjustable pivot pins

  • Durable 10-degree geometry

  • Compatibility with a wide range of cushions and components

The result is a skate that feels precise, stable and responsive whether you're skating outdoors, cruising the rink or pushing harder into artistic and rhythm skating.

The Conversion Process

Every Nike Flexlite 2 conversion begins by removing the original ice blade holder and preparing the boot for quad skate mounting.

At Pabloskates we then:

  1. Inspect the boot for structural integrity.

  2. Reglue the outer plastic sole

  3. install carbon fibre reinforcement plates which get riveted to the outer sole for maximum durability.

  4. Position the Avanti Magnesium plate for optimal balance.

  5. Install mounting hardware.

  6. Align the plate to ensure straight tracking.

  7. Fit wheels, bearings and toe stops if required.

  8. Perform final setup and inspection.

The goal is to create a skate that not only looks fantastic but performs exactly as it should.

How Do They Skate?

This combination delivers an incredibly lively skating experience.

The Flexlite 2 boot provides:

  • Excellent heel lock

  • Comfortable ankle support

  • Good forward flex

  • Lightweight feel

The Avanti Magnesium plate adds:

  • Immediate response to steering inputs

  • Excellent energy transfer

  • Stable edge control

  • Reduced weight compared to many aluminium alternatives

Together they create a setup that feels fast, agile and confidence-inspiring.

Who Is This Setup Best For?

A Nike Flexlite 2 and Avanti Mag build is ideal for:

  • Chop skaters

  • Rink skaters

  • Recreational skaters

  • Anyone wanting a premium custom quad setup

If you're looking for a skate that stands out from the crowd while delivering serious performance, this is one of the best combinations available.

Flexlite 2 Availability

One challenge with Flexlite 2 conversions is sourcing suitable boots. Production ceased in 2008 so good-condition examples are becoming increasingly rare. Their popularity among quad skaters means they often sell quickly whenever they become available.

Because of this, every pair that comes through the workshop is carefully selected before conversion.
