A Simple Guide to Faster, Smoother Rolling Bearings
If your skates feel slow, noisy or rough, there's a good chance your bearings need cleaning.
Many skaters automatically replace bearings when performance drops, but in most cases a proper clean can bring them back to life and save you money.
In this guide we'll show you the simple bearing cleaning process we use in the workshop and explain the tools you'll need to get the job done properly.
Why Clean Your Bearings?
Your bearings are constantly exposed to:
Dust
Dirt
Hair
Moisture
Road grime
Sand and grit
Over time this contamination works its way inside the bearing and increases friction.
Common signs your bearings need cleaning include:
Reduced speed
Rough rolling
Grinding noises
Bearings that stop spinning quickly
Visible dirt around the shields
Cleaning your bearings regularly can dramatically improve performance and extend their lifespan.
What You'll Need
To clean your bearings properly you'll need:
Bearing removal tool
Bearing cleaning unit
Cleaning fluid
Clean cloth or paper towel
Bearing lubricant
The good news is that all the tools, cleaning equipment and replacement bearings featured in this guide can be found on our bearings page.
Whether you're looking for budget replacement bearings, premium ceramic bearings, Bones Reds or bearing maintenance tools, we've got you covered.
Step 1: Remove the Bearings
Start by removing your wheels from the skate.
Using a bearing tool makes this job much easier and helps avoid damaging the bearing during removal.
Carefully remove all bearings from the wheels and place them somewhere clean.
If you're cleaning a full pair of quad skates you'll usually have sixteen bearings to clean.
Step 2: Remove Dirt and Hair
Before washing the bearings, inspect them closely.
Hair is often the biggest culprit.
Remove:
Hair
Dust
Fluff
Large dirt particles
A small pick, tweezers or bearing tool can help remove stubborn debris.
The cleaner the bearings are before washing, the more effective the cleaning process will be.
Step 3: Use a Bearing Cleaning Unit
Place the bearings into a bearing cleaning bottle such as the Bones Bearings Cleaning Unit.
A proper cleaning unit allows multiple bearings to be cleaned at the same time and helps cleaning fluid reach the inside of the bearing where dirt accumulates. Bearing cleaning units designed for roller skate bearings are available from our bearings collection.
Fill the cleaner with your chosen cleaning solution and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Agitate the bearings thoroughly.
You'll often be surprised how much dirt comes out.
Step 4: Dry Thoroughly
Once cleaned, remove the bearings and allow them to dry completely.
This is an important step.
Any moisture left inside the bearing can lead to corrosion and poor performance.
Many skaters leave bearings to air dry for several hours before lubricating them.
Never reinstall wet bearings.
Step 5: Lubricate the Bearings
Once dry, apply a small amount of bearing lubricant.
Less is more.
Adding too much lubricant can actually attract dirt and slow the bearings down.
The aim is simply to reduce friction and protect the internal components.
Spin each bearing by hand to distribute the lubricant evenly.
Step 6: Reinstall and Test
Reinstall the bearings into your wheels and fit the wheels back onto your skates.
Give each wheel a spin.
You should notice:
Smoother rolling
Less noise
Better free spin
Improved performance
If a bearing still feels rough after cleaning, it may be worn out and ready for replacement.
When Should Bearings Be Replaced?
Even the best bearings won't last forever.
Consider replacing bearings if:
They feel rough after cleaning
Rust is visible
Shields are damaged
The bearing has excessive play
Performance remains poor
Fortunately replacement bearings are available to suit every budget, from reconditioned bearings and standard ABEC bearings through to premium Bones Reds and ceramic options.
