This week's build diary features a skate that perfectly demonstrates why hockey skate conversions continue to be so popular.
For this project, we converted a pair of Bauer X-LS ice hockey skates into a fully functional set of quad roller skates using Playmaker plates.
The result is a comfortable, affordable and capable setup that is ideal for anyone looking to get into roller skating without spending a fortune.
Bauer X-LS Quad Skate Conversion on Playmaker Plates
The Bauer X-LS has become one of our go-to boots for affordable quad skate conversions.
Sharing 99% of its DNA with the hugely popular X-LP, the X-LS offers the same comfortable fit and easy-to-work-with construction. For skaters looking to build a dependable set of quads without breaking the bank, it's an excellent option.
For this build, we paired the Bauer X-LS with a set of Playmaker plates to create a versatile setup suitable for indoor skating, outdoor cruising and recreational sessions alike.
Why the Bauer X-LS?
Some hockey skates make quad conversions unnecessarily complicated.
The Bauer X-LS isn't one of them.
Like the X-LP, the X-LS benefits from a straightforward plastic sole that makes mounting plates quick and hassle-free. This not only speeds up the conversion process but also makes the boot particularly appealing to DIY builders tackling their first project.
The X-LS sits within Bauer's recreational skate family alongside the X-LP, NS, NSX and Elite models. These boots share many similarities in construction, which is one of the reasons they've become so popular within the skate conversion community.
The result is a boot that delivers:
Excellent value for money
Comfortable support for long skating sessions
Lightweight construction
Classic hockey skate styling
A secure fit that many skaters prefer over traditional quad boots
For many skaters, the X-LS hits the sweet spot between performance, comfort and affordability.
Preparing the Conversion
As with any successful conversion, preparation is key.
The original blade holders were first removed before the sole was cleaned and inspected. Accurate measurements were then taken to determine the ideal plate position.
Getting the alignment right is one of the most important stages of a conversion. A properly positioned plate can make the difference between a skate that feels awkward and one that feels perfectly balanced beneath your feet.
Care and precision at this stage help ensure the finished skates perform exactly as intended.
Why Playmaker Plates?
To complement the Bauer X-LS, this build used Playmaker plates.
Over the years, Playmakers have established themselves as one of the most popular choices for hockey skate conversions thanks to their balance of affordability, reliability and performance.
Key features include:
Lightweight nylon construction
10-degree truck geometry
Adjustable toe stops
Smooth and predictable handling
Outstanding value for money
Whether you're skating at the rink, cruising outdoors or simply enjoying recreational sessions, Playmaker plates continue to offer exceptional performance for the price.
Mounting and Assembly
Once the plate position had been finalised, the mounting hardware was installed and secured.
The remaining components were then assembled, including:
Trucks
Cushions
Bearings
Wheels
Toe stops
Each component was carefully adjusted before the skates underwent a final inspection.
Attention to detail during assembly helps ensure every pair leaves the workshop ready to skate from day one.
The Finished Result
The finished Bauer X-LS conversion struck an excellent balance between performance and practicality.
Paired with Playmaker plates, the X-LS creates a setup that's equally at home on the rink floor or out on the streets.
One of the biggest advantages of hockey skate conversions is the fit. Many skaters appreciate the secure heel lock and supportive feel that hockey boots provide, particularly when compared with some traditional quad boots.
The Bauer X-LS delivers that familiar hockey boot feel while offering all the fun and versatility of quad skating.
Who Is This Setup For?
A Bauer X-LS on Playmaker plates makes an excellent choice for:
New skaters
Recreational skaters
Indoor rink skaters
Outdoor cruisers
DIY builders
Anyone looking for excellent value for money
It's a setup that offers comfort, reliability and versatility without requiring a premium budget.
