Here we have a pair of classic Bauer Flexlite 2.0 boots converted into high-performance quad skates using Sure-Grip Avenger Magnesium plates.
The Flexlite 2.0 remains one of our favourite boots to convert. They offer excellent ankle support while still retaining enough flex to make them comfortable and responsive on quad skates. Unlike many modern high-end ice hockey boots, the Flexlite range strikes a great balance between support and manoeuvrability, making them an excellent candidate for conversion.
Why Carbon Fibre Reinforcement Was Needed
Before mounting the plates, these boots required carbon fibre strengthening plates to be installed.
The Flexlite 2.0 uses a sole construction that can flex under the loads generated by quad skating, especially when paired with high-performance plates and larger outdoor wheels. Over time, this movement can lead to mounting issues and unnecessary stress on the boot sole.
To prevent this, we fitted custom carbon fibre reinforcement plates between the boot and the skate plate. This spreads the load across a much larger area of the sole and creates a significantly stronger mounting platform.
Benefits of carbon fibre reinforcement include:
Increased mounting strength
Reduced sole flex
Better power transfer
Improved durability
Reduced risk of mounting hardware pulling through the sole
For older hockey boots such as the Flexlite 2.0, carbon fibre reinforcement is one of the best upgrades you can make during a conversion.
The Plate Choice: Sure-Grip Avenger Magnesium
For this build, the customer selected the Sure-Grip Avenger Magnesium plate.
The Avenger is a lightweight 45-degree plate designed for skaters who want exceptional manoeuvrability and edge control. The magnesium construction keeps weight to a minimum while maintaining impressive strength.
Key features include:
Lightweight magnesium construction
45-degree truck geometry
Adjustable pivot system
Excellent turning response
Suitable for dance, jam, artistic and rhythm skating
The Avenger's responsiveness pairs particularly well with the Flexlite boot, creating a setup that feels both supportive and agile.
The Build Process
The conversion process included:
Removal of the original ice blade holders
Preparation and inspection of the boot sole
Installation of custom carbon fibre reinforcement plates
Precision alignment and positioning of the Avenger Magnesium plates
Drilling and mounting of all hardware
Final assembly and adjustment
Full inspection before dispatch
As with all our builds, the plates were aligned individually to ensure the best possible skating experience.
The Finished Result
The finished skates combine the comfort and classic styling of the Bauer Flexlite 2.0 with the performance of one of the most respected plates available today.
With the addition of carbon fibre reinforcement, the customer now has a setup that is not only lightweight and responsive but also built to withstand years of skating.
